Trachoma, its Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Trachoma is an eye disease caused by infection from infected affected person directly or indirectly. It affects cornea, eyelids and conjunctival covering. The disease is totally curable and preventable. The disease is primarily found in tropical and semi tropical countries. The disease affects children the most.

Trachoma is caused by tiny parasitic bacteria. The prevalence of poor sanitation conditions, unclean water, poor personal and community hygienic standard breed the bacteria and affect the persons in the area.  The disease can result in loss of vision if not treated in time. The direct or indirect contact with the infected person can lead to trachoma disease. The indirect contact happens when flies or insects take the infection and spread it to other persons. The secretions of eye, nose or throat of the infected persons are carried by these flies or insects to normal persons, spreading trachoma. The use of common towels also can lead to the disease. The disease can spread from one village to another and from one group to another group in the same village or area.

The symptoms of the trachoma are redness and irritation with tears in the eye. These symptoms can progress to potential vision loss, with repeated infections and lack of treatment. After examining the eye and eyelid of the infected person, the doctor will recommend the treatment.

Strangely the treatment is very simple. The oral dose of antibiotic is given to the infected person .the other side of the treatment is use of clear water and sanitations conditions and towels.

In some poor endemic areas, the treatment consist of  taking preventing measures to find the presence of trachoma among children in 1-9 years of age. Since this is infection disease, the treatment usually involves giving antibiotic to the persons who might have come in contact with the infected person, directly or indirectly. If trachoma has spread to inward –turning of lashes, then surgery is done to correct and stop the lashes from spreading to cornea.
